The challenge
Next-generation microgrid technologies (inverter-based resources, distributed energy, V2G, modular architectures) needed a test bench that could validate topologies, controls and integration under real-time conditions, accessible to researchers well beyond the physical lab.
What DSAT delivered
An OPAL-RT Microgrid PHIL Test Bench System with a Hybrid DC-AC Power Hardware-in-the-Loop platform, enabling researchers to test and validate IBR and DER topologies, control strategies and modular architectures for large-scale microgrids, remotely controllable for collaboration across distributed research communities.
The result
A single platform serving microgrid design, cybersecurity, EV/V2G, DER integration, advanced inverter control and real-time validation of emerging grid technologies, accessible to researchers located away from the laboratory.
Outcome
A microgrid research platform that expands KFUPM's reach beyond the physical laboratory, enabling collaboration, remote experimentation and validation of next-generation grid technologies.
